The Big Three

Graydon turned three on October 20 ("TWEN-tee-iff", as he will tell you). He first became aware of birthdays with Glen's in April, and really fell in love with the idea when Ian had cupcakes in July. Then he watched my birthday arrive in August, and finally, FINALLY, it was his turn. We had a full-blown celebration at the park with Mimi and Pops the night before we headed up to Richmond. Mom got there ahead of time and set up a table with gifts, balloons and cupcakes, and we set him loose in the park to find "the birthday." Here is a picture of his face when he saw it. Pure glee.

We have been trying to make the point that a birthday and a cake are two different things ("We eat my birthday now?"), but when he opened his first present and it turned out to be clothes, he closed the box and said, "Where my birthday?" So, the cupcakes came out!

It wasn't until he opened his trucks from Mimi and Pops that he realized presents could be fun, too.

Earlier this year, Graydon learned to tell people that he was two. Then he learned about the number four and began to say that instead. Next he was "six." So we thought it was great when he learned, for the last few weeks, to say that he was "almost three." When someone asked him his age the day after his party, we waited for him to say, "three." Nope. The new answer was "almost four."

We praise God for three years with you, our wonderful little son, and all the delight your zest for life brings into our family!
