Gitang School
Even though our lives - and blog - have moved on, I still wanted to do a short post on Vineyard Academy in Gitang. This is a private K-5 school started a few years ago by a friend of our host family. Children generally start school between 2 and 3 years of age in South Asia, so "K" is broken up into 2 or more years.
The school amazed us on several levels. First, its utter simplicity. Mostly bamboo construction, it is a simple row of classrooms with an office at one end. But it holds a lot of students!

Second, the view from the porch and school yard is incredible!

Third, they do a lot with very little. When we visited the village, we brought several story books (from a much bigger collection at home) to read with our kids. Glen read one to a class while we were there, and we learned that there are no story books at this school - not one! Our friend said they would love to have books, but it's just not prioritized over other necessities. When we go back, we hope to take some to leave for the school.
